    The Curriculum

The curriculum is all the activities that we organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. It includes not only the formal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum, but also the range of opportunities and co-curricular activities that the school organises in order to enrich their childhood experiences. We teach a ‘creative curriculum’ which is designed to engage and inspire all learners and stimulate curiosity, independence and a love of learning. There is planned progression in all curriculum areas and whilst some subjects are taught discretely, a cross-curricular approach is used whenever possible to enhance and connect pupils’ skills, knowledge and understanding.

There is an emphasis at Shoreham Village School on the ‘hidden curriculum’, or what the children learn from the way they are treated and expected to behave. We aim to teach children how to grow into positive, responsible people, who can work and co-operate with others while developing knowledge and skills, so that they achieve their best. We value the way in which all children are unique, and our curriculum promotes respect for the views and abilities of each individual child, as well as for people of all cultures. All staff encourage the children to demonstrate good manners, courtesy and high standards of personal behaviour.

Our school follows the National Curriculum for England and Wales and further information can be found on the government website.

Termly Curriculum Letters are published to parents at the start of each term. These provide greater detail of what will be taught each term. Please click on the documents below to view our Termly Curriculum letters.

We use the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum as the starting points of our curriculum. The curriculum at Shoreham Village School is taught in two cycles: A and B which are a mix of two year groups curricula.

As our pupils from Years 1 to 6 are taught in mixed year groups classes, we focus on teaching the skills relevant to their ability whilst delivering the knowledge content that is appropriate for their age group.  This means that, for example, across Year 3 and Year 4 the pupils will have learned the Cycle A and Cycle B curriculum and by the time they leave Year 4 they will have been taught the full Year 3 and Year 4 curriculum.

Our curriculum is designed to build pupils skills and knowledge across the sequence of lessons they learn, across the year and across the school.  They will revisit skills and knowledge learned previously so that they can further embed their learning and add to it.

We share curriculum newsletters with families at the start of each term so that everyone is informed about what pupils will be learning and when.  These are available in each class section on the right.  Please do ask your child’s class teacher if you would like further information.

We work closely with our SENCo, teaching and teaching support staff to ensure our curriculum is accessible to all pupils, making adaptations as appropriate so that all pupils can have the same outcomes.  Our curriculum complies with our duties in the Equality Act 2010 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Regulations 2014.

    Teaching

The Policy sets out very clear expectations for high quality teaching, against which all adults working with children are monitored and judged, challenged and supported

    High quality teaching:

    • Gives pupils some responsibility for their work and independence
    • Develops well planned, prepared and paced lessons that maintain high levels of interaction with the class
    • Maintains high levels of pupil involvement in tasks
    • Creates a positive atmosphere in the classroom through excellent relationships
    • Incorporates high levels of praise and encouragement
    • Uses a variety of approaches; strategies and techniques are well selected and time is used productively
    • Uses home learning effectively; particularly to reinforce and extend what is learnt in school.
    • Provides carefully structured activities matched sensitively to pupils needs
    • Uses Teaching Assistants to support children with particular difficulties or special talents.
    • Provides ample, challenging work stemming from expert knowledge of the curriculum, how to teach it and how pupils learn
